British Values at Windwhistle Primary School

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At Windwhistle we promote democracy through encouraging pupils to share their views and opinions about our school through ‘Pupil Voice’.  Children's comments about specific issues are displayed and valued. Pupils also vote for a member of their class to represent them on the School Council which meets regularly to discuss ways in which we can improve our school.

The rule of law is reinforced by strict adherence to our School Rules which are displayed in every classroom and promote positive behaviour and encourage children to take responsibility for their actions.  Restorative Justice is used to repair broken friendships with adult support.

We promote respect and consideration for others through praise and recognition, our new merit award system is embedded within the ethos of the school.  We encourage children to care for our school grounds and equipment.  Our school motto, 'Achievement through Building Confidence' reflects our positive aspirations for every child to succeed both academically and to grow and develop as young people and citizens of our society.

We promote tolerance and understanding by welcoming visitors into school for assemblies or class workshops to share their knowledge and experiences.  We value diversity in our religious education lessons and during international week when we celebrate other cultures' beliefs, traditions and customs.

We promote liberty through establishing a safe learning environment in which children can become empowered as individuals and learn how to make healthy lifestyle choices and keep themselves safe online.
